Versions of Enthymeme

I had to write out what enthymeme meant since it was used with the word syllogism.  Try saying those two words ten times without stuttering!  Reading how they relate to one another was a reading tongue twister, but my impression was that enthymeme means a type of syllogism and syllogism represents dialect.  Aristotle explains how to use rhetoric correctly in the three forms of enthymeme.  Enthymeme is three divisions of oratory; political, forensic and ceremonial.  Each type of speech has a different time and focus towards the speeches idea that it is trying to get across to an audience.  Whoever delivers the speech needs to convey different types of behavior and inflect emotion when it is needed to influence the audience.  Aristotle argues that using emotion only to get your point across shows no real art in the form of rhetoric that you must have real facts and techniques to back up your point.

Cicero De Oratore focuses on eloquence within a speech that even with little training or a lot of training a good speaker must have a good sense of eloquence within their words.  Aristotle looks at how and defines what speeches should contain, while Cicero De Oratore complains about how little focus there is on the art of giving a good speech and where speech really has been studied.  At the end of Cicero De Oratore he defines that a really good speech begins with a person who has a wide knowledge on many subjects but also has a sense of style with their words.  He does agree with Aristotle that a speech magician should know the range of people’s emotion and how to tap into the public’s feelings.  If the orator has no real knowledge on different subjects but knows basic ideas they can lose an audience by the audience not believing in what they say.  Aristotle also discusses believability with an audience that if an audience looses interest because of a lie or can tell the orator has little knowledge the orator can lose the audience’s favor.

Most of what I read seemed like I read it before when I took speech as a sophomore in college.  Many of the ideas presented where basic principals used in speech class.  I had no idea so many of the speech techniques used came from so long ago.  Many of the ideas used make sense if you follow a crazy persons emotions on a speech like Aristotle discussed the general populace would think you are crazy.  When I think of all the lawyer shows I have watched where they try to feel out the jury; it makes me realize they are trying to find the popular opinion so they can win the case.  When a lawyer goes to court that is why they dress up and try to look like a good guy or lady to win over the jury’s visual acceptance as well.  I always liked that they dress up for court but now I realize it is a means towards an end.
